XV International PR Festival: Truthful Conversation of Experts in the Post-Truth Era

On 12 April 2017, one of the oldest and largest industry events held on the territory of Ukraine, the XV International PR-Festival, took place. More than 30 authoritative speakers and more than 200 participants gathered at the same venue in the capital's Radisson Blu.

The semi-anniversary Festival, whose organizers have fundamentally avoided discussing political issues over the past few years, was dedicated to communications in the post-truth era (post-truth – the word of 2016, according to the Oxford Dictionary). "The truth no longer matters in a changed world. That is, it matters for a particular person at a particular moment. But it has ceased to be an absolute value for society as a whole,” explains Olena Derevianko, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Festival (Partner of the PR-Service Agency, Vice-President of the Ukrainian PR-League, Doctor of Economics).

The speeches of Olena Derevianko and Valentyn Korolko, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, Head of the Department of Theory and Methods of Public Relations of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, about the context and trends of modern PR, aroused keen interest among those present. The panel discussion on fact-checking and the reliability of media information turned out to be very informative, which was attended by heads and editors of leading mass media, as well as independent experts. The participants in the discussion were Development Director of the Internet project Realist Denys Bezliudko, Editor-in-Chief of the KyivVlast portal Ihor Darmostuk, independent expert Oleksandr Klimashevskyi, political strategist Dmytro Kasianov, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the online newspaper Strana.ua Svitlana Kriukova and Strategic Marketing Director at “1+1 Media” Olena Martynova.

At the Festival, a lot of time was devoted to discussing the strategy and tactics of reputation management. Sensation, in the literal sense of the word, was made by a frank speech by the Co-Owner and Head of the Impel Griffin service company, Candidate of Economic Sciences Vitalii Opanasiuk, on the topic “PR: First-Person Perspective”. The businessman, about whom Forbes magazine once wrote a “success story”, in particular, said, “At this Festival, first of all, there should be people like me. So that everyone understands the importance of reputation and the price of wrong decisions.”

Representatives of the Publicfast, AIR, and TSN.ua projects, as well as SERM, spoke about working with opinion leaders – experts, bloggers, and video bloggers. Speakers from the banking sector, retail, multi-brand companies, etc., spoke about the functionality of a PR specialist in companies of different business models and industry specifics of public relations. ESTHEL, L'Oréal Ukraine, Maybelline New York, Nielsen, StarLight Media, WOG-retail, and others.

Finally, the culmination of the Festival was the awarding ceremony for the winners of the III National Rating of Corporate Reputation Management Quality “Reputation ACTIVists”, which brought together leading experts in 13 sectors of the economy and top officials of leading companies in the Ukrainian market.
